It is that time of the year to start your grass. Get your baskets ready and lined, and head off to the closest feed store for Wheat grass seed and a bag of vermiculite.
Once you have your supplies, the process it quite simple. Line a basket with plastic wrap, add vermiculite, add your wheat grass seed, and water. Cover with plastic wrap until you have an inch or so of growth. We keep ours near a window for the light, and come Easter morning you will have beautiful lush green baskets of fresh grass.
We have been growing our own Easter grass for years, it really makes a lovely hostess gift, you can have your children fill a basket with freshly dies eggs. If you want to use it as a centerpiece you may want to use a long shallow basket.
We will be starting our baskets next week. All the books I have seen suggest staring it on Palm Sunday, and although that is a lovely tradition, it is simply not a long enough time to get a nice thick green grass.
Happy planting!
Thanks for sharing this idea!
I think we'll do it!
